San Francisco: Food, Fun & Fashion Guide
Cioppino
#Food
- Is there a more authentic Italian-American meal with a California twist? Cioppino.
- It first appeared in the 1800s in North Beach, a mash-up of San Francisco's abundant seafood and sizeable Italian community.
- This seafood "stew" is made with fresh catches such as mussels, clams, scallops, squid, shrimp, and fish in a tomato-wine broth and served on crusty sourdough toast.
- Some of the best varieties can still be found in North Beach neighbourhood jewels like Sotto Mare, while one of the best dates back to 1849 at Tadich Grill, a seafood icon that offers outstanding cioppino in single or sharing bowls.
Mission Burritos
#Food
- According to popular belief, burritos, as we know them now, are an American innovation.
- And no burrito is more famous than San Francisco's Mission-style burrito, which originated in the neighbourhood's legendary taquerias in the 1960s and 1970s.
- El Faro, El Farolito, Taqueria La Cumbre, and Taqueria Cancun, for example, are still operating strong.
- Locals have long argued about who makes the best burrito and what ingredients should be included.
- La Taqueria rolled up with fabulous meats, and no rice remains king for many of us (including the James Beard Foundation, which named it "America's Classic").
Dim Sum
#Food
- Although Hong Kong is the birthplace of dim sum, it's challenging to find a more extensive selection of dim sum in the United States than in San Francisco.
- Yank Sing, which has been around since 1958, is modelled after Hong Kong's elite Michelin-starred dim sum restaurants. Ton Kiang, a long-time vendor, serves Hakka dim sum while
- Shanghai-style Xiao long bao dumplings abound. Long lineups form outside Good Luck Dim Sum for freshly produced takeout dim sum.
- Hong Kong Lounge, which has two locations in Richmond's Richmond district, is a local favourite (we prefer the more intimate HK Lounge II).
Ferry Building
#Fashion
- Most malls are enclosed, maybe to guard against the heat of summer and the chill of winter.
- Although many of the Ferry Building's artisanal businesses are located inside, during weekends, many booths pop up outside to make use of the Ferry Building's spectacular location right on San Francisco Bay, with views of both the Golden Gate Bridge and the Bay Bridge.
- Head to the Ferry Building, a famous San Francisco building, if you want more out of your shopping experience than just a pile of items.
- The Marketplace is a popular location for anyone who enjoys cooking or eating, with a range of speciality food stores and eateries.
- On Tuesdays and Saturdays, a farmers market is conducted outside.

- There are also restaurants and theatres here and convenient garage parking.
- Public transportation is readily available, and public concerts provide a welcome break.
